How to call Ireland (international dialing)
- Do not dial a leading ‘0’ in the international call sequence – it is only used in Ireland for domestic long distance calls and domestic calls to a mobile phone.
- A leading '+' in the phone number means 'dial your country's exit code'.
- Calling from a mobile phone: dial from on the country where you're currently located.
- Calling from a VoIP or satellite phone: dial from on the country where the phone is registered.
Ireland’s country code may be mislabeled:
- Country code 00353 (exit code of ’00’ used in many European, Asian, and African nations followed by Ireland’s country code of ‘353’).
- Country code 011353 (exit code of ‘011’ used in the United States and Canada followed by Ireland’s country code of ‘353’).
When calling to a mislabeled country code, remove the exit code from the call sequence and replace it with the exit code of the country the call is dialed.
… to a mobile (cellular) phone
Use the same call sequence.
Mobile phone numbers are represented by area codes ’08’. Do not include the leading ‘0’ when calling from outside Ireland.
When calling a mobile phone user, dial to the country where the mobile phone is registered, regardless of where the person is roaming.
… to a VoIP phone
Use the same call sequence.
When calling a VoIP phone user, dial to the country where the VoIP phone is registered, regardless of where the person is roaming.
… to a satellite phone
Ireland does not have a country-specific satellite phone system.
Most satellite phones operate on their country code – calls to these satellite phones follow their call sequence.
… sending a fax
Use the same call sequence.
How to call within Ireland (domestic dialing)

Local calls (within the same area code)

How to call from Ireland
…to all regions of the world except for Northern Ireland
’00’ is used as an exit code when dialing an international call from the Republic of Ireland.
… to Northern Ireland
The Republic of Ireland can reach Northern Ireland fixed line (landline) phones through the regular international dialing sequence, or through an alternative direct dial sequence.
To call Northern Ireland through the alternative call sequence, replace the Northern Ireland area code ‘028’ with ‘048’ and dial directly.
For example:
Belfast landline 90xx xxxx can be reached directly from the Republic of Ireland by dialing either or the shortened call sequence:
048 | 90xx xxxx |
direct dial to Northern Ireland from the Republic of Ireland | local phone number in Belfast |
or the regular international sequence:
00 | 44 | 28 | 90xx xxxx |
Irish exit code | country code for the United Kingdom | regional code for Northern Ireland | local phone number in Belfast |
Mobile phone numbers in Northern Ireland must be called using the regular international call sequence.
